Did you know that crooked teeth can impact more than your child’s appearance? Overcrowding or misalignments can make it harder to brush and floss them because reaching all the surfaces is more challenging. Fortunately, your pediatric dentist can improve their oral condition with braces.
Although these tried-and-true orthodontics have a long history of success, many youths avoid treatment because they’re worried they’ll be judged for how they look with bulky metal brackets bonded to their teeth. Sharing some pop-culture references featuring braces can remind them that they’re not alone in their predicament. If you have a self-conscious teen or pre-teen at home, keep reading to learn 3 movie references that might set their mind at ease!
Film #1: Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
Who doesn’t love a good sugar rush? That could be one of the reasons why the movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is such a hit. It features the eccentric candy maker, Willy Wonka, who promises an enchanting tour of his factory and a lifetime supply of chocolate to a few lucky golden ticket holders.
One of these tickets is discovered by a boy in braces, Charlie. His orthodontics and headgear don’t stop him from enjoying the sweet treats! This might not convince your child that braces are ‘cool’, but it’s sure to bring a smile to their face.
Film #2: The Incredibles
Many children turn to superheroes when seeking someone to look up to, and with good reason. We all want to believe that we can be stronger, faster, smarter, or kinder than the villains in our lives. Some role models, however, don’t wear capes. One such character can be found in the Disney adventure The Incredibles.
Each member of this animated family has their own unique powers, including the baby, Jack-Jack. At one point in the storyline, the family must rescue Mr. Incredible, so they leave their youngest brother behind with a braces-wearing babysitter, Kari McKeen. Although she doesn’t have super-human abilities, she also doesn’t allow the metal brackets to hold her back from doing everything it takes to try to keep Jack-Jack out of harm’s way.
Film #3: Finding Nemo
Another popular character sporting orthodontics can be found in the beloved childhood movie Finding Nemo. The titular clownfish character, Nemo, is captured by a fishing boat and transported to a lively aquarium at a dentist’s office.
Although he may be safe there from the dangers of the big blue sea, he and his cohorts are terrified of ending up as a pet for the dentist’s niece, Darla, who wears braces. She arrives for a dental visit and wants to take a friend home, but she has a history of being overly rough with her fish. As a result, Nemo and his friends work together to ensure she doesn’t get to keep them.
Seeing some of their favorite characters in braces can help alleviate some of your child’s anxiety about their own upcoming orthodontic treatment!
